Maltby died of consumption, at the age of 27, after having entered the second year of his law practice." There is also a "sheet of paper beautifully written, he left to 'Hester Ann Maltby by her affectionate dying brother'."

Another record is: "Moved to Dakota and all died there but one. One of Aunt Julia's grandchildren is Stoddard Kimball, he visited W. H. Maltby at Elba in 1914, was in poor health and intended to move his family to Southern N.Y. State."

When he was about eighteen years of age, on account of his health, it was recommended that he take a sea voyage and he went on a sailing vessel to England.
